Jesse Malin covers the Hold Steady’s “You Can Make Them Like You” on his new album, which is made up of all cover songs.
While Malin’s acoustic take on the Hold Steady rocker is a fairly straightforward rendition of the song, his musical taste here makes up for the lack of transcendence.
By picking one of the Hold Steady’s most wryly depressing songs, Malin has reminded me how great this song is.
“You don’t have to go to the right kind schools. Let your boyfriend come from the right kind of schools. You can wear his old sweatshirt — you can cover yourself like a bruise.”
