“Many Rivers To Cross” — The Walkmen

Written by Jimmy Cliff, Harry Nilsson covered “Many Rivers To Cross,” in 1974 as the lead-off track on his album “Pussy Cats.” The Walkmen did a track by track recreation of Nilsson’s “Pussy Cats” in 2006.
The Walkmen’s take on “Many Rivers To Cross” on their “Pussy Cats” record is, I think, the most successful track on the album, mostly due to the performance of the band’s lead singer, Hamilton Leithhauser.
Leithhauser consistently goes for broke as a singer, belting out his lyrics with an intensity that blows away many other indie rock vocalists, and in that sense, his ragged vocal-cord-scorching singing is all too appropriate on this cover.
